To reduce overcrowding caused by an impending school closure plan next year, the Lake Oswego School Board could reopen a building that was closed just last year or add portable classrooms to two of its elementary schools.
Lake Oswego Real Estate School Public Hearing
Close to 70 community members gathered at Lakeridge High School as the board heard several recommendations on how to best address overcrowding issues next year as they close additional elementary schools this week. The board will hold a public hearing on the issue April 23, followed by a vote two days later.
The district last April voted to implement a cost-saving plan that closed Palisades Elementary School before this school year, and is slated to shut down Bryant and Uplands elementary schools next year. But after administrators revealed growth in the River Grove Elementary area could lead to portable classrooms next year, a number of parents pushed to create a committee that eventually came out against that idea.
Palisades To Reopen?
A committee presented its recommendations on Monday, pushing for the reopening of Palisades Elementary. A secondary plan includes adjusting the north-south boundary line — which roughly follows Oswego Lake — to redistribute students, including pulling south side students to the north side’s Lake Grove Elementary.
The debate over how to address the River Grove classroom problem is the latest point of contention regarding the school closure plan, which has drawn controversy since it was first proposed last year.
